Howrah Bridge in Kolkata

 Howrah Bridge is a cantilever bridge over the Hooghly River in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Howrah Bridge is made by replacing a pontoon bridge at the same location and because of that it was originally named as new Howrah Bridge. Everyday, More than 60,000 vehicles go through Howrah bridge. In 1939, Howrah bridge was constructed but it was available to traffic from 1943. It connects two cities which are Kolkata and Howrah.

 Brief History of Howrah Bridge

 Howrah bridge was constructed in 1939 but it was opened to traffic from 1943. You might be shocked after hearing that total cost of Howrah bridge was Rs 333 crore. It is a very huge amount. Total 26,500 tons steel was used in the construction of Howrah Bridge. In 1965, Howrah Bridge was renamed as Rabindra Setu after the name of Rabindranath Tagore. It was renamed but still it is popularly known as Howrah Bridge.

  Best view of Howrah Bridge come from the middle of the river. Keep in mind that photography from that point is strictly prohibited. The ferries which are running below Howrah station is the best way to cross the river and view the bridge. Howrah Bridge is the sixth longest bridge in its type of bridges in the world.
